Surfing Courses
The International Training College and the Academy of Surfing Instructors commenced their visa approved surfing courses in 2007 and these have proved to be very popular and are regualrly booked solid. The courses have a variety of entry levels and cater for beginner, intermediate and advanced surfers.

Course numbers are strictly limited so enrol early so you are not disappointed!

The surfing course is very popular on the Gold Coast and the International Training College has gone to great lengths to find a credible partner to keep our students happy, and provide them with real world skills and provide real world vocational outcomes. We have done this with the Academy of Surfing Instructors.

The Certificate I in Sport & Recreation for surfers is aimed at the beginner. Students will learn some generic workplace skills that will help them find a job and keep it. They will also learn the basics of surfing and get in lots of swimming and surfing practice on those fantastic Gold Coast beaches. The students will spend their days between the classroom and the beach, as well as completing basic surfing industry projects. The Certificate I is the ideal entry level qualification and will be completed over 12 weeks.

There are two levels of the Certificate II in Sport & Recreation for the surfing enthusiast. Both courses will run for six months, with one aimed at beginner surfers and one aimed at developing intermediate surfing skills.

The Certificate II for beginners has the same surfing units as the Certificate I but has more training on workplace skills, business administration and promoting products and services to clients. Once again the students time will be spent divided between the classroom, the beach and local surfing retailers checking out how it is all done.

The Certificate II for intermediate surfers carries on from the Certificate I in Sport & Recreation and enables the student to develop their personal surfing skills to the intermediate level of difficulty. This program is aimed at people seeking employment within the surfing industry. Once again, this program is a mixture of theory and practical surfing down at the Gold Coast's fabulous beaches.

The Certificate III in Sport & Recreation for surfing is aimed at advanced surfers who wish to become a surfing instructor and work in a surf school. During this 12 month course students will develop their skills and knowledge of surfing, learn how to conduct surfing lessons to beginner and intermediate students, as well as the necessary business administration and sales & marketing skills required to work in a surf school. This program also includes the Academy of Surfing Instructors certificate for Surfing Instructor (Level 1) and the NCAS Coaching General PrincipleS (1Level 1) certificate.

The Gold Coast beaches are renowned for their beauty, cleanliness and fine surfing conditions and are probably the Gold Coast's biggest attraction. 57 kilometres of beach stretches from Rainbow Bay to South Stradbroke Island, with 25 full-time lifeguards patrolling 14 beaches all year round. During summer, there are 35 flagged beaches open with an extra 65 casual lifeguards patrolling from 7.30am until 6.30pm. And this is not even mentioning the thousands of volunteer lifeguards who operate during warmer months between September and April. In fact, the Gold Coast City Council patrols more beaches than any other local authority in Australia, utilising helicopters, boats, jet skis and watercraft in its rescue operations, making it an ideal destination for families.

Surfing is a major sport on the Gold Coast (after all, the main attraction in town is Surfers Paradise), attracting some of the world's best competitors. Duranbah, Burleigh Point, Kirra and South Stradbroke are just four of the many great surfing spots, providing pumping surf and great barrels. The Gold Coast has played host to international championships such as the Billabong Pro. With more than 20 surf lifesaving clubs on the Gold Coast and many of the country's top ironmen and women living and training here, there is always plenty of action at weekend carnivals.

You can check out the Gold Coast surf online at Burleigh Cam or Coastal Watch, or check out the surf spots at wannasurf.com.
